Updating the firmware#
Tiles and the main module update in different ways. Both start from the Firmware screen of the config app.
Tiles#
Tiles update over the bus. Nothing is unplugged and no programmer is needed. One tile updates at a time; the rest of the chain keeps working.
- Open Firmware in the config app.
- Any tile running older firmware than the images the site carries is listed with an Update button.
- Press it and wait. Progress is shown as it goes.
The tile drops out of the chain for a few seconds and rejoins when it is done. Its address and its bindings are untouched.
A tile that loses power partway through an update is not bricked. It comes back on its old firmware.
The main module#
The main module updates over USB by drag-and-drop.
- Press Update main module in the config app. The board reboots into its bootloader, and the COM port disappears. This is expected; the config app reports the lost connection.
- A USB drive called RPI-RP2 appears on your computer.
- Drag the
.uf2file onto it. The drive disappears and the board restarts on the new firmware.
Your configuration — bindings, LED colours, USB personality — survives the update.
If the config app cannot reach the board at all, unplug the board, hold the BOOTSEL button, plug it back in, and release. RPI-RP2 appears the same way.
Which versions am I on?#
The Connect screen reports the main module’s firmware version, and Diagnose reports each tile’s. Mixed versions across tiles are fine. Diagnose flags any tile whose protocol is not compatible.
